Use eco-friendly paper

If you don't know the fact that mostly papers are made from woods, please learn it atleast now. Predominatly papers are made from woods. Papers made from wood are produced after cutting down huge amount of trees. Nowadays synthetic papers also being used. It is also possible to make paper from many waste products in the world like vegetable waste, fruits waste, grass etc. Though these technologies are invented very long years ago, they are not in practice because of the popularity of wood made papers. These technologies are picking up well after proper education amoung our people. Indian Govertment is doing a good job through KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries commission) by promoting handmade and recycled paper manufactures in small scale.

I met a KVIC beneficiary yesterday. His name is Sundar. He is a young chap left his Charted Accountant courses and career after learnt about handmade paper industry and its benefits to society. He has approached KVIC, got loan and subsidary on capital amount and started his own venture. He is doing excellent service (business) by giving employment to many rural workers. They are bringing up many innovations as products. I am surprised to see photo-frames, purse, pen-stand and many desktop items made out of handmade boards. The quality is very rich.

I am happy to hear State Bank of India has sent a circular to all branches to use eco-friendly paper ten days ago. You too use eco-friendly paper and save trees.

Agnihothra

I heard about Agnihothra few months back in an ayurvedic exhibition at Madurai. One middle aged enthusiatic person was showcasing an inverted copper pyramid and explained about the agnihothra in a stall. I thought it to be some black magic technique and just walked around the stall. I was surprised to see various incidents, experiments and happenings with Agnihothra that was posted on the walls. Many doctors have researched about this and recommended this as a good therapy. Many reasearchers have experimented and have wrote papers on its power on agriculture and environment... Wow... what is it all about? Is that all true and can I see anything practically? With these Questions, I showed interest to the middle aged person. He actively and precisely presented about the Agnihothra.

Agnihothra is a simple homam. It has its roots in Vedas (perticularly in Atharvana and Rig Veda). This is not specific to a religion. This is to worship Agni with some simple offerings and mandras during sun-rise and sun-set time. The process is simple
a) Take an inverted copper prism and place some cow-dung cakes in it
b) Light it with camphor and put some ghee and raw rice exactly during sun-rise and sun-set time
c) Chant two line sanskrit mantra during this time.

This homa purifies the atmosphere and produces enormous positive energy from the pyramid. Recently I did this in my home along with SEVA president. It was a wonderful experience and I was able to feel the difference...

You can find more details about it and its scientific proofs from

Green tips you can practice every day

The following article is from greenpeace.org

Green tips you can practice every day

Water
- Fix any leaky faucets, toilets or water pipes. Even a small drip can add up to a lot of water over time.
- Wash your car the natural way - wait until it rains.
Install water saving faucets.

Energy
- Conserve fuel by turning down the heat at night and while you are away from your home — or install a programmable thermostat.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Insulate your home against heat loss and periodically check insulation.
- Fix air leaks with weather stripping and caulking.
- In the winter, change your furnace air filters once a month. The heater uses more energy when it is full of dust.
- Insulate your electric hot water heater and pipes. Do not, however, insulate gas heaters and only start insulating gas heater pipes about six inches away from the heater.
- Avoid using cars — walk, cycle or use public transportation whenever possible.
- Avoid anything battery operated (or use rechargables or solar rechargables if batteries are unavoidable).
- Buy locally — not only is it good for the local economy, it will save energy because products haven’t traveled across the globe to get to you.

Toxics
- Use non-toxic cleaning alternatives in your home, such as the ones listed in the booklet.
- Furnish your home with furniture made out of natural fibres, wood, metal and glass.
- Avoid the use of polyvinyl chloride (also known as PVC or vinyl) in your home. The entire life cycle of products made from PVC pollutes the environment and your home. PVC items include shower curtains, flooring, even some children’s toys.
- Avoid the use of aerosols.
- Use castor or mineral oils to lubricate switches and hinges instead of lubricants containing solvents.
- Choose water based latex paints over solvent based paints when painting your home. Never use lead based paints.
- If you have a furnace, fireplace or gas heater, have them serviced regularly to prevent deadly fumes and install a carbon monoxide detector.
- Ensure you have good ventilation and balanced humidity in your home to prevent the growth of mould and mildew, which can be harmful to your health.

Waste
- Do not throw out your toxic household wastes, such as paint, paint thinner, and car fluids, in the garbage or down the drain. Check with your local facilities for proper disposal and avoid these products in the future.
- Take your own bags to the grocery store. If you take plastic bags, use them until they are worn out.
- Compost your food waste and use as nutrient rich soil for your lawn.
- Avoid excess packaging.
- Always use reusables mugs, lunch containers, batteries, pens, razors, etc.
- Replace paper products with reusable ones (use recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper when you do have to use paper).
